## How x402 Works

1. Send a request to the endpoint
2. Receive HTTP 402 with a `PAYMENT-REQUIRED` challenge
3. Sign the Base-USDC authorization with an x402-compatible wallet
4. Re-send the request with `PAYMENT-SIGNATURE`
5. Receive the API response and `PAYMENT-RESPONSE` settlement receipt

Fixed-price calls use x402 v2 `exact`; usage-based calls use `upto` and settle actual usage beneath the authorized maximum.
Both schemes settle USDC on Base (`eip155:8453`).
If the upstream API fails, the payment is not settled.
Echo the `x-locus-request-id` returned by the initial 402 on the paid retry. Recover ambiguous requests with `GET /requests/{requestId}` instead of issuing a new provider call.
