How to add Locus MCP to Gemini CLI

To add Locus to Gemini CLI, run gemini mcp add with the Locus MCP server URL, start Gemini, and run /mcp auth locus-pro to approve Locus in your browser. Gemini can then call paid APIs from one Locus Pro credit balance, with no provider accounts or keys.

Setup, step by step

  1. Step 1

    Create a Locus Pro account

Sign up at paywithlocus.com/pro. The Free plan has no subscription. Paid calls use prepaid credits.

  2. Step 2

    Add the server

Run this in your project folder. It saves the server to .gemini/settings.json in that folder.

gemini mcp add locus-pro https://api.paywithlocus.com/api/credits/mcp --transport http
  3. Step 3

    Sign in to Locus

Start Gemini CLI and run the auth command. Approve Locus in the browser tab it opens. Gemini prints "Successfully authenticated".

    /mcp auth locus-pro
  4. Step 4

    Check the connection

Run /mcp list. Locus should show as Ready with its tools. Then ask: "What's my Locus balance?" A balance check is free.

    /mcp list

What do I need before adding Locus to Gemini CLI?

You need Gemini CLI signed in with a Google account or a Gemini API key. The model login is separate from Locus. Without it, the server connects but Gemini cannot answer.

OAuth needs a local browser and a callback listener, so run the auth step on the machine you sit at, not over plain SSH.

We tested Gemini CLI 0.62.0. After /mcp auth, Locus showed as Ready with 11 tools, 3 prompts, and 4 resources.

Why does Gemini CLI show Locus as Disconnected?

Before you sign in, Disconnected is expected. /mcp list shows "OAuth not authenticated" until you run /mcp auth locus-pro.

If gemini mcp list says the server is disabled because the folder is untrusted, trust the folder first. Gemini silently skips MCP servers in untrusted folders.

  • Run /mcp reload after Locus adds new tools to refresh the list.
  • Check that the URL is exactly https://api.paywithlocus.com/api/credits/mcp.
  • Remove and re-add the server with gemini mcp remove locus-pro to start over.

Can I add Locus to Gemini CLI for every project?

Yes. Add --scope user to the add command to save the server in your user settings instead of the project folder. Your Locus sign-in is stored per server, not in the settings file.

What can Gemini CLI do with Locus connected?

Gemini can search the Locus catalog, read an API schema and price, and run the call against your credits. For usage guidance, it can call get_locus_guide.

Try a real task: run a web search with sources, find a verified work email, or pull company data. Review the charge in Locus activity afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gemini CLI need a Locus API key?

No. Gemini registers itself with Locus over OAuth and stores a refreshable token. Revoke the Gemini CLI MCP Client connection in Locus to cut off access.

Can I use the Locus CLI instead of MCP?

Yes. The Connect page in your Locus dashboard also shows a CLI method for Gemini. MCP is the shorter path for most people.

Does checking my balance cost credits?

No. get_balance is free. Paid tools show their price before the call.
