What's the best web search MCP server?
Perplexity and Parallel scored highest in a September 2026 search benchmark Locus ran on six providers, and both rank near the top of the Artificial Analysis leaderboard. Exa and Parallel offer free MCP servers that need no key. Brave, Tavily, Firecrawl, and Perplexity need an account. Locus Pro reaches all six through one MCP connection.
How do the main web search MCP servers compare?
All six have an official MCP server. They differ in setup, free tier, and what they do best. Direct prices are from each vendor page on September 29, 2026. Locus Pro prices are live catalog quotes for one standard search call on the same day.
| Provider | Best at | Official MCP server | Free tier | Direct price per search | Locus Pro per call |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | Top single-provider score in both benchmarks | Remote https://api.perplexity.ai/mcp or npx @perplexity-ai/mcp-server, API key | None listed | $0.005 | $0.00575 |
| Parallel | Close second on quality, $0.001 Turbo tier for speed and cost | Remote https://search.parallel.ai/mcp, no key needed | Up to 5,000 requests a month | $0.005 (Basic or Advanced) | $0.008 (Advanced) |
| Exa | Research questions with many answers | Remote https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp, no key needed for rate-limited use | $10 in credits a month | $0.007 (Auto) | $0.0084 |
| Brave | Independent index with web, news, image, video, and local search | Local npx @brave/brave-search-mcp-server, API key | $5 in credits a month | $0.005 | $0.035 |
| Firecrawl | Search plus scraping in one server | Remote https://mcp.firecrawl.dev/v2/mcp-oauth, OAuth | 1,000 credits a month | 2 credits per 10 results, plans from $16 a month | $0.0047 |
| Tavily | Simple setup with a generous free tier | Remote https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/ with API key, or npx tavily-mcp | 1,000 credits a month | $0.008 (Basic) | $0.09 (Basic) |
Which web search API returned the best results?
Perplexity (high) scored 79.3 and Parallel (advanced) scored 78.0 in our run. Brave, Firecrawl, Tavily, and Exa followed. The public Artificial Analysis leaderboard puts the same two providers near the top.
Method: in September 2026, Locus ran an Artificial Analysis style search benchmark. One agent model with a fixed prompt answered 90 tasks, 30 each from DeepSearchQA, BrowseComp, and AA-Omniscience. Only the search backend changed between runs. The index is the mean of the three scores. Differences of about 2 points are within noise on a panel this size.
- Exa's low Omniscience score in our run looks like an outlier. Artificial Analysis scores Exa auto at 74 overall, and Exa scored well on the other two parts.
- Firecrawl had the best Omniscience score but the weakest BrowseComp score, so it suits fact lookups more than long multi-hop hunts.
- Perplexity (medium) scored 78.2 and Parallel (turbo) scored 74.7, both within a few points of the top.
| Provider (mode) | Locus index | DeepSearchQA | BrowseComp | Omniscience | Artificial Analysis score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity (high) | 79.3 | 81.1 | 76.7 | 80.0 | 79 |
| Parallel (advanced) | 78.0 | 77.2 | 76.7 | 80.0 | 75 |
| Brave (web) | 71.7 | 71.8 | 63.3 | 80.0 | 75 (LLM context mode) |
| Firecrawl | 70.6 | 75.3 | 50.0 | 86.7 | 73 |
| Tavily (basic) | 65.3 | 65.8 | 53.3 | 76.7 | Not listed |
| Exa (auto) | 63.8 | 78.1 | 70.0 | 43.3 | 74 |
Does using more than one search provider help?
Yes, in our tests. Combining Perplexity (high) and Parallel (advanced), then reranking to 10 results, scored 84.2. That beat every single provider on the same panel.
We also replayed about 1,430 real agent queries against each provider. The best single provider found the answer 39.0% of the time. Picking the best provider per query would have reached 49.8%. No query feature predicted which provider would win. That test combination is not the exact setup of any Locus endpoint.
When is a direct MCP server the simpler choice?
If you only need one search provider, connect its MCP server directly. Parallel and Exa need no key for light use, so setup is one URL.
Direct is also cheaper for Brave and Tavily today. A basic Tavily search costs $0.008 direct and $0.09 through Locus Pro. A Brave search costs $0.005 direct and $0.035 through Locus Pro. For heavy use of either, go direct.
How do you reach every search provider from one MCP connection?
Add the Locus Pro MCP server once. Your agent can then call Perplexity, Parallel, Exa, Brave, Firecrawl, and Tavily from one credit balance, with no keys or accounts at those vendors. Each call shows its price first.
For mixed results, the router/web-search endpoint queries several engines in parallel, removes duplicate URLs, fuses the rankings, and records which provider found each result. Its fast mode uses up to 2 engines, balanced uses 4, and comprehensive uses all of them. You pay the exact sum of the underlying calls, and you can set a credit ceiling.

Frequently asked questions
Which web search MCP server is free?
Parallel and Exa both run hosted MCP servers you can use without an API key, with rate limits. Tavily and Firecrawl give 1,000 free credits a month, and Brave gives $5 in credits a month, but all three need an account.
Can I add more than one search MCP server to my agent?
Yes. Most MCP hosts accept several servers. Each one adds tools to the context, and the agent has to pick between similar tools. One connection to a router keeps the tool list shorter.
Do these servers fetch full pages or only search results?
Most do both. Exa, Parallel, and Firecrawl include a fetch or scrape tool next to search. Brave returns search results and summaries. Check the tool list after you connect.
Is the Locus benchmark data public?
The numbers on this page come from our internal run in September 2026. The panel is 90 tasks, so treat gaps under about 2 points as ties. The Artificial Analysis leaderboard is public and tests a wider set of products.
