Agentic Payments
Enable autonomous AI agents to make real payments — purchasing APIs, hiring services, and transacting on the open internet without human intervention.
What are agentic payments?
Agentic payments are financial transactions initiated and completed by AI agents autonomously — without a human clicking "confirm" on every purchase. As AI agents evolve from simple chatbots into autonomous workers that browse the web, call APIs, hire contractors, and procure resources, they need the ability to pay for things. Traditional payment rails like credit cards and bank transfers weren't designed for software agents. They require human identity verification, manual approvals, and can't enforce programmable spending rules. Agentic payments solve this by giving agents their own wallets with built-in guardrails.
Why agentic payments matter
The shift toward autonomous AI agents is accelerating. Frameworks like AutoGPT, CrewAI, LangGraph, and OpenAI's Swarm are enabling agents that can plan, reason, and execute multi-step tasks. But these agents hit a wall when they need to spend money — calling a paid API, purchasing cloud compute, or paying for a service. Without agentic payments, every financial action requires a human in the loop, defeating the purpose of autonomy.
24/7 autonomous operation
Agents can run overnight, over weekends, and across time zones — making purchases and API calls without waiting for human approval.
Programmable spending rules
Unlike giving an agent your credit card, agentic payment systems enforce per-transaction limits, daily budgets, and approved vendor lists at the protocol level.
Full auditability
Every transaction is logged on-chain and in Locus's audit trail with the agent's reasoning, the amount, the recipient, and the timestamp. Complete transparency for compliance and debugging.
How Locus enables agentic payments
Locus provides the complete infrastructure stack for agentic payments. Each agent gets a non-custodial ERC-4337 smart wallet on Base, funded with USDC stablecoin. The agent receives a session key with scoped permissions — it can only spend within the limits you define. When the agent needs to call an API, hire a service, or make a purchase, it transacts directly from its wallet. Locus's three-layer policy engine checks every transaction against your rules before execution.
- •Smart wallets — ERC-4337 account abstraction on Base with session keys and programmable permissions
- •3337 agent tool providers — Call OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Tavily, and more with pay-per-use pricing from a single wallet
- •Policy enforcement — Per-transaction limits, daily/weekly/monthly budgets, and approval thresholds
- •MPP / HTTP 402 — Machine-native payment protocol for agent-to-service transactions on the open web
Agentic payment use cases
- •Research agents — Autonomously search the web, call data APIs, and compile reports — paying per query
- •Coding agents — Execute code in sandboxed environments, call LLMs for code review, and deploy services
- •Sales agents — Enrich leads via Apollo, verify emails via Hunter, and purchase contact data on demand
- •Multi-agent swarms — Orchestrator agents delegate tasks and budgets to specialist sub-agents, each with its own wallet
